Stormy sky is winning shot in Suffolk Beauty
photography competition.



The image, captured by Juliet Blaxand at Easton Bavents, came top in the new contest which was run for the first time this year.
Organised by the Suffolk Preservation Society (SPS), the competition saw more than 100 entries sent in and scrutinised by judges Roy Fox, Linda Clapham and Richard Jozefowski.
They were tasked with whittling down that number to a shortlist of just 10 photographs.
Winners were announced at a ceremony at Haughley Park Barns on Monday.
A photograph called Southwold Beach Huts by Kinga Ston came second, while an image named Ipswich Street Scene taken by Matt Huggins was third.
Winner Juliet said her home – which is the most easterly placed house on the Suffolk coast – was the focus of her entry.
The judges awarded her first prize because of the way she had captured the “atmospheric Suffolk sky”.
They praised her placement of the historic farm buildings, the image’s openness to the elements and its link to Suffolk’s brewing industry.
SPS director Fiona Cairns said: “The range and quality of photos was very high. We could see that a great deal of thought had gone into expressing how each of the entrants felt about the essential nature of their Suffolk compositions.
“Suffolk is a truly beautiful county and we are delighted that so many people took the time to share with us their special places in this unique county.”
Former National Trust boss Dame Fiona Reynolds, who is also master of Cambridge’s Emmanuel College, presented the winners with their prizes.
Juliet was given a trophy and £100, while the second and third runners up were given £75 and £25 respectively.
Dame Fiona also spoke to members of the SPS at the event, and her speech focussed on the importance of natural beauty and protecting historic buildings at a time when numerous planning applications are in motion.


She strongly backed the charity’s Suffolk Beauty campaign, which aims to make sure all new development decisions take the beauty of the county’s countryside into account.
